One Piece: The Potential of Luffy’s Gear 5 Hito Hito no mi – Nika Model
Note: This article contains spoilers from the One Piece Manga.
Eiichiro Oda has kept us excited about his masterpiece for over twenty years, and its popularity is still ongoing. The story follows the journey of Monkey D. Luffy and his quest to become the King of All Pirates. The Straw Hat’s growth, primarily through overcoming adversity, is the highlight of the series; Luffy grew more robust with each battle and, through his warrior spirit, awakened Gear 5 after being defeated by Kaido for the third time in the final battle, which revealed that his Devil’s fruit was never a Paramecia-type, to begin with. Luffy had eaten the mythical Zoan-type Devil’s fruit, Hito Hito no mi: Nika.
Gear 5: The Sun God
Gear 5 is Luffy’s awakening, allowing him to appear like the Sun God: Nika. Luffy’s eyes, clothes, and hair turn white, and we can see white clouds going between the arms and around the neck. Luffy’s heart beats match a rhythm that Zunesha calls The Drums of Liberation. His personality shifts into a more boisterous and joyous one which has been foreshadowed by the name; Joy boy since the Straw Hats adventure in Skypea.
Nika reflects in Luffy in every way, shape, and form, and he is a God who prefers freedom above all else. Even in the age of slavery Nika with a positive aura paved the way for those who were chained to a path of liberation.
Luffy’s Devil Fruit and its Power
Mythical Zoan devil fruits come with unique and rare abilities, which makes them the rarest devil fruit of all. Only a few Mythical Zoan types are known in the One-Piece world, including Sengoku the Buddha, Marco the Phoenix, and Kaido the Dragon. They possess immense strength, and Kaido is renowned for being the strongest among everyone. Luffy names his new skill Gear 5, which harnesses the power of all his previous gears, adds ridiculous strength and grants him new abilities.
Luffy’s Gear 5 and it’s Awakening
Awakening is a state which can be reached by all devil fruit users, which allows the user to utilize the full potential of their devil fruit. Gomu Gomu No mi: Nika’s awakening has been named the most ridiculous power on earth; even Kaido said it seems like it’s out of a picture book. Like the Awakening of Doflamingo in Dressrosa and Katakuri in Whole Cake Island, anything Luffy touches in his awakened state turns into the rubber he can control. The one difference is that Luffy’s Gear 5 also affects people who, if touched, are turned into cartoonish rubbery versions of themselves.
Matching the musical rhythm of his heart to the rhythm of the Drums of Liberation, Gear 5 allows Luffy to use his enlarge his limbs without the need to pump air and use his rubbery body to the max. Luffy managed to attack Kaido with an enlarged fist and dodged Kaido’s Bolo Breath attack by turning the ground to rubber and deflecting it.
The elasticity of his body grows, and the strength of the rubber is maximized; limb inflation allows Luffy to grow to giant sizes. He managed to grab Kaido in his Dragon form with one hand during the battle at Onigashima and thrash him. Gear 5 gives Luffy immense freedom and creativity to fight in whatever way he wishes, representing the Sun Gods’ personality and strength. Luffy evolved his combat abilities by using his Devil’s fruit in various ways and naming the stages, Gears. He utilizes the breathing and blood circulation from Gear 2, the size of Gear 3, without inflating his bones and a combination of Conqueror’s Haki from Gear 4 in this form to maximize his potential.
Effects and Transformation
The immense strength and form of Gear 5 takes a massive toll on Luffy’s body, especially the energy it consumes. This is because of his lack of training and experience. We can see Luffy’s body visibly age as the effects of the Devil’s fruit wear off which also worried all his crew that was watching.
The personality shift displayed by Luffy during this transformation is inherent to all Zoan types, which adapt to the nature of their animal. Luffy takes on the heart of the Sun God, who prioritizes freedom, exudes energy, and spreads joy and laughter to everyone. Luffy can initiate Gear 5 at any time by forcing his heart beats to match the musical rhythm of the Drums of Liberation.
Hito Hito No Mi: Nika
Devil fruit grants users mystical powers, and Luffy’s Devil’s fruit was found to be a Mythical Zoan type instead of a Paramecia one. Paramecia types are known to be the weakest Devil fruit which grants their owners superhuman abilities; Paramecia-type awakenings allow the user to transform the environment and manipulate it.
Zoan-type Devils’ fruit allows the user’s body to transform into animals; Mythical Zoan fruits enable the users to transform into creatures of Myth and Legends. These fruits allow the user to transform and use additional abilities like Kaido’s ability to manipulate the elements.
Little is known about the Hito Hito No Mi: Nika (Gomu Gomu No Mi: Nika) and its true nature. Still, there are a few peculiarities that make this fruit special. Luffy can transform his surroundings like Paramecia Awakenings, which even Kaido called unusual. The fruit’s ability is called The Most Ridiculous simply because it breaks the laws of nature itself, allowing Luffy to run through air, change his size and even change humans to rubber. We have just scratched the surface of its abilities which is why it’s understandable that the World Government and the Five Elders were after this Devil’s fruit for over 800 years, as told by Gorosei in the manga.
Experiencing One Piece
One Piece Odyssey is the newest One Piece video game which features the Straw Hats lost on an Island full of mysteries and enemies. The game, sadly, does not feature Luffy’s Gear 5 since it was recently shown in the manga after the game’s storyline was completed. The game features Luffys Gears and the crew’s power of Haki and their new forms. It is available on all major consoles; Odyssey still needs to be added to Game Pass. Still, previous games have made it to Game Pass, and Xbox is a great way to play the game that would be best played with the One Piece aesthetic.
Monkey D. Luffy has gained an outrageous ability and carries the will of Joy boy. He even managed to grab a lightning bolt by turning it into rubber, the power of Gear 5 is outrageous, and its potential is unlimited. With the introduction of Gear 5, Luffy has become one of the strongest characters in One Piece. However, there are still many mysteries about this ability and its history that remain unsolved. Fans still wonder and can’t wait to see what Eiichiro Oda has in store for our favorite protagonist and how he and his pirate warriors evolve on their journey.
